Merry Christmas

Hello All,
We want to wish everyone a very Merry Christmas. We so enjoyed our RS Christmas lesson on Sunday, and thank all of those who were a part of making it happen--Elaine Kramer, Norma Metz, Sue Meyers, Shelley Stratton, Kassie Klein, Julee Klein, Francesca Beddow, Jenefer Young & Claudia Leppert, and all who attended.
We also send a huge thank you to those who prepared for and shared messages/talents with us at our RS Activity ("All is Calm, All is Bright") on December 1. It was a wonderful evening and helped to start the season off in the best way.

Book Club Meeting - December 8

Hi gals, I am really slow with my reminders. Luckily this month's book is basically a picture book, which should make for quick "reading" The book is:

Material World, by Peter J. Menzel.

Should be a perfect way to kick-off the season of giving! : )

Remember we decided to meet early this month, so we are meeting on the 8th at Cristy's house.

Happy reading and Happy Thanksgiving.

Ellen Dorrough

BTW - I just got done with my Hunger Games "retreat" (my husband calls it the Twilight effect...the family loses me for a couple of weeks), so I'm warning you if you don't want to get stuck discussing a book everyone read last year...don't ask me about it. I might talk your ear-off. Loved it! Just warning you! : )

November Book Club Meeting

Hi Book Club Gals!
Our meeting on Thursday was very interesting! Thank you to Beth for hosting!
So in our September kick-off meeting everyone thought it might be good to adjust book club to the 2nd week of Nov and Dec. So our next meeting is on:
November 10th, @ 7:30pm at Holly's
We will be discussing In Defense of Food, by Michael Pollan.
It is a very interesting book and makes you think twice about what you eat.
Happy reading!

Book Club Tonight!

Book Club Gals - Tonight 7:30pm Beth's place! Blood Diamond. Come even if you did not read it. I think there is alot we can discuss without having read the entire book. Things like:
The diamond indrusty is it a monopoly?
What is the true cost of the rocks that we wear so proudly?
Diamond indurstry impact on the goverments and social structures of Africa.
Violence that is tied to it.
Why do we value diamonds so much?
Wikipedia, Google, and the movie are good references to consider.

Next Month: I have down that we agreed that the book club we meet the 2nd Thusday in both Nov and Dec. Nov 10th and Dec 8th. Does that still work for everyone? Let me know if there is any major concerns with those dates.

Upcoming Books:
Nov - In Defense of Food
Dec - Material World

See you tonight.

Oct. 20 - Book Club

Book Club Gals - We have book club coming up next week! Oct 20th at 7:30pm @ Beth Batten's house. We are reading Blood Diamond. Now I have had several of you either say that you started the book and couldn't finish it, or have little desire to even start it. If you fall into either of those groups, don't despair! Many of us still want to discuss the diamond trade and how the book and the movie compare. I will likely get the scoop from Wikipedia and come ready to discuss. So bottomline...you still should come!
Beth's address is:
4172 NW LoisElaine Terrace
Portland, OR 97229
Look forward to seeing you there!

Last Sunday's Lesson

Many thanks to Kathleen Towsey for her lesson last week on the post-mortal spirit world. We enjoyed hearing thoughts and questions from many of those in our RS. A few quotes from the lesson manual:

Latter-day prophets have said that the spirits of those who have died are not far from us. President Ezra Taft Benson said: “Sometimes the veil between this life and the life beyond becomes very thin. Our loved ones who have passed on are not far from us” (in Conference Report, Apr. 1971, 18; or Ensign, June 1971, 33).

Spirit beings have the same bodily form as mortals except that the spirit body is in perfect form (see Ether 3:16). Spirits carry with them from earth their attitudes of devotion or antagonism toward things of righteousness (see Alma 34:34). They have the same appetites and desires that they had when they lived on earth. All spirits are in adult form. They were adults before their mortal existence, and they are in adult form after death, even if they die as infants or children (see Teachings of Presidents of the Church: Joseph F. Smith [1998], 131–32).

If you would like to read or review the lesson, here's a link: http://lds.org/manual/gospel-principles/chapter-41-the-postmortal-spirit-world?lang=eng

Seeking Renters?

A sister in our ward sent the following:

I have an LDS friend who is trying to move to the area from Maryland. She and her husband don't have jobs (although they have first and last months' rent and a cushion saved). They haven't been able to rent anything because they can't document income yet. Do you know anybody in the ward or stake who might be looking to rent to a very nice family?

If you would like more information, email me at fallnews@comcast.net. ~Jill Newsom

- The host will provide the treats for the evening.
- We will plan to do some movie trips - even if the book isn't on our list! : )
- Was there anything else that I missed?
I want to apologize. A couple of you didn't get the books you nominated into the mix. I am very sorry I missed them, the blame lies entirely on me and I hope that we can either consider them for the summer book or for next year's books. Please know that it wasn't intentional, and that next year I will be more methodical so that no one is missed! I am very sorry!
I am very excited for another great year of reading with great gals! Thanks to everyone!

New Additions

Here are two of our ward's newest additions and their wonderful moms: Sara & Cole Carter, and Maryn Rebecca Becker & Kathy Foulger. Congratulations!

Temple Work/Family History Lesson

Thanks to Ellen Dorrough for teaching our lesson on this topic earlier in September. She had Marcia Miller share some of her great family history ideas. Marcia showed this quilt, which reflects the history of her extended family, including quotes related to humorous family stories. Marcia's brother also sends out a list of 12 topics each January for the siblings to write about during each month of the year. In December, he compiles them all into a binder and presents them as Christmas gifts. What a wonderful way to share memories!

Information about our speaker:
With an uncanny ability to get people laughing, storyteller and ABC television personality Kelly Hoffman has told stories on air and in festivals across the West for over ten years.  She has been a presenter and performer at a variety of festivals and conferences, including the Mount Timpanogos Storytelling Festival.  Kelly uses her amazing range of vocal ability combined with her hypnotizing body movements to paint vivid pictures for her listeners.   Whether she is telling fractured fairy tales in a New York accent, Native American stories with songs and changing, or an original comedic tall tale, Kelly's stories are well-crafted and uniquely her own.  Listening to her stories will have you laughing one minute, crying the next, and occasionally hanging on the edge of your seat.

Book Club

Ellen Dorrough hosts a Book Club open to all interested participants.  It is not an official Relief Society group, but since there are many members of our RS participating, we will gladly share information here!  Any friends are more than welcome, and you do not need to have read the book to attend.

The next meeting will be Saturday, September 17, 7 p.m. at Ellen's. Her address is 13819 NW Falconridge Lane.  The book is "Tender at the Bone" by Ruth Reichl.  Here is Ellen's latest email:
Below is a list of the recipes in the book.  If you need copies of the recipes, I will make copies for you.  Now... alot of these recipes are either very complex,  too expensive for a potluck, or simply outside of most of our palates.  So feel free to bring something as a replacement or bring your own version of the same thing.  If you are going to bring something from her book please sign-up below so that we don't end up with 10 lemon souffles (on second thought that wouldn't be so bad).  Anyway, please sign up below or indicate if you will be bringing something else.  Please copy everyone (sorry) that way everyone has the most upto date list.  I will send a final list next week.  (Note: feel free to give Ellen a call--number at the bottom of the post--since you can't respond here to her email!)
Recipes from Tender at the Bone
Miriam Reichl's Corned Beef Ham

STAKE INDEXING UPDATE

Hello all -- Hope you are enjoying a sunny (yeah!) Labor Day weekend. With fall right around the corner it's a great time to evaluate your personal indexing goal for the year. Have you met it yet? Are you on track to meet it? We're doing great as a stake, and are poised to meet our stake goal for the year probably in the next month or so, once indexers are back to their old routines. You can always spice things up by trying to index a batch in a foreign language with which you are familiar, or moving from beginner to intermediate, or intermediate to advanced in the batches you choose. Accuracy is more important than speed, so these batches may take a little longer to index, but the need for people to move on from beginner batches is great. So challenge yourself!

Here are the numbers for August:

names indexed in August: 31,397
names arbitrated in August: 6,649
total indexing for August: 38,046
total indexing YTD: 562,989

Remember, our stake goal for the year is to reach 611,300 names. We're almost there!

Happy Indexing -- Stephanie Holladay, stake indexing director  503-690-3603  or  stake.indexing.director@cm-stake.org
