November Book Club Meeting

Hi Book Club Gals!
Our meeting on Thursday was very interesting! Thank you to Beth for hosting!
So in our September kick-off meeting everyone thought it might be good to adjust book club to the 2nd week of Nov and Dec. So our next meeting is on:
November 10th, @ 7:30pm at Holly's
We will be discussing In Defense of Food, by Michael Pollan.
It is a very interesting book and makes you think twice about what you eat.
Happy reading!

Book Club Tonight!

Book Club Gals - Tonight 7:30pm Beth's place! Blood Diamond. Come even if you did not read it. I think there is alot we can discuss without having read the entire book. Things like:
The diamond indrusty is it a monopoly?
What is the true cost of the rocks that we wear so proudly?
Diamond indurstry impact on the goverments and social structures of Africa.
Violence that is tied to it.
Why do we value diamonds so much?
Wikipedia, Google, and the movie are good references to consider.

Next Month: I have down that we agreed that the book club we meet the 2nd Thusday in both Nov and Dec. Nov 10th and Dec 8th. Does that still work for everyone? Let me know if there is any major concerns with those dates.

Upcoming Books:
Nov - In Defense of Food
Dec - Material World

See you tonight.

Oct. 20 - Book Club

Book Club Gals - We have book club coming up next week! Oct 20th at 7:30pm @ Beth Batten's house. We are reading Blood Diamond. Now I have had several of you either say that you started the book and couldn't finish it, or have little desire to even start it. If you fall into either of those groups, don't despair! Many of us still want to discuss the diamond trade and how the book and the movie compare. I will likely get the scoop from Wikipedia and come ready to discuss. So bottomline...you still should come!
Beth's address is:
4172 NW LoisElaine Terrace
Portland, OR 97229
Look forward to seeing you there!

Last Sunday's Lesson

Many thanks to Kathleen Towsey for her lesson last week on the post-mortal spirit world. We enjoyed hearing thoughts and questions from many of those in our RS. A few quotes from the lesson manual:

Latter-day prophets have said that the spirits of those who have died are not far from us. President Ezra Taft Benson said: “Sometimes the veil between this life and the life beyond becomes very thin. Our loved ones who have passed on are not far from us” (in Conference Report, Apr. 1971, 18; or Ensign, June 1971, 33).

Spirit beings have the same bodily form as mortals except that the spirit body is in perfect form (see Ether 3:16). Spirits carry with them from earth their attitudes of devotion or antagonism toward things of righteousness (see Alma 34:34). They have the same appetites and desires that they had when they lived on earth. All spirits are in adult form. They were adults before their mortal existence, and they are in adult form after death, even if they die as infants or children (see Teachings of Presidents of the Church: Joseph F. Smith [1998], 131–32).

Used Couch Available

Received from a neighboring ward:

We have a couch at our old house that needs to go by Thursday evening.
A couple of the seat cushions have a split in the fabric, but it is very clean & sturdy.
I will have to coordinate the retrieval with our agent to open the house.

Call if you know anyone who wants it

Seeking Renters?

A sister in our ward sent the following:

I have an LDS friend who is trying to move to the area from Maryland. She and her husband don't have jobs (although they have first and last months' rent and a cushion saved). They haven't been able to rent anything because they can't document income yet. Do you know anybody in the ward or stake who might be looking to rent to a very nice family?

If you would like more information, email me at fallnews@comcast.net. ~Jill Newsom

Water Barrels for Sale

We have two 50-gallon, food-grade water barrels currently full at our house in Hillsboro. We filled them about 4 years ago with filtered water and need them to go.
We are asking $25 each, but you have to drain and haul them away. If you are interested call Mike 509/460-0049.
